Srinagar: Two militants were killed during a gunfight that raged during a search operation in Khonmoh area in Srinagar outskirts soon after militants made an abortive bid to snatch weapons from two policemen guarding a local BJP leader on Thursday.
Four houses were also razed to the ground during the gunfight.
The two militants were identified as Rasiq Nabi Bhat of Tral and Shabir Dar of Awantipora, police said.
As per police records, they had joined militancy last year in the month of March and August respectively.
The police, however, has not ascertained to which militant outfit the duo belonged to.
A paratrooper was injured during the gunfight whose condition is said to be stable when this report was filed.
On Thursday afternoon, a BJP leader Muhammad Anwar was attacked by militants in Balhama, Khonmoh in city outskirts who was guarded by two policemen.
The attack was repulsed and militants fled from the spot. One policeman was injured in the action.
Soon after, government forces launched a manhunt to find the fleeing assailants in the area in the form of cordon and search operation.
Some reports said that a Pakistani militant Hammas, who was also holed up in a house, has managed to escape from the spot.
