Baramulla ‘braid chopping victim’ a psychiatric patient, says police

A teenage girl who claimed she was attacked  by a braid-chopper in Baramulla is suffering from psychiatric ailments, police said Thursday.

Following reports of a braid chopping incident at Khawaja Bagh, a police party went to the spot and started preliminary investigation into the matter.

“The family is originally from Uri and father of the girl works in police department. The girl reported that her braid was chopped during the night. However she was sleeping in the same room with her parents and there seemed to be no possibility of any outsider making entry into the room.  The father went to duty in the morning as per routine,” a police spokesman said.

“During further investigation it was found that the girl is suffering from psychiatric ailment with dissociative symptoms and has been undergoing medical treatment for that. She was examined by a psychiatrist on 28 September with a follow-up check- up yesterday only at  District Hospital Baramulla,” the spokesman said.

“A psychiatrist was called by the police to examine her and the report is awaited,” the spokesman said.

The spokesman said that the girl’s claim that the braid- chopper had made entry through a wall and escaped through a closed door “manifests conversion disorder (hysteria).”

Police has also recovered a fresh shaving blade from the spot, the spokesman said, adding investigating of the case is going on.
