A trooper thrashed by locals on suspicion of being a braid chopper was rescued by the army and police in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district Tuesday, reports said .
A video of the incident went viral on social media but there was no comment from the army or the police.
Soon after, clashes erupted in various areas of Kupwara between locals and government forces.
In Srinagar, angry residents blocked Rambagh-Natipora road in the city in the morning to protest against a braid chopping incident in the Beighpora area, the officials said.
They said traffic on the road, which leads to Chrar-e- Sharief, remained suspended for a couple of hours.
Protests also broke out in the neighbouring old Barzulla locality where a girl was allegedly attacked by the mysterious braid choppers during the night, the officials said.
The locals approached the police for registering case but were not satisfied with the response of the law enforcing personnel.
The residents then came out on the main road to protest against the incident, leading to a massive traffic jam, the officials said.
Shutdown and clashes were also reported from the city’s Maisuma locality against braid chopping incidents.
Over 100 incidents of braid-chopping have been reported in the last one month, with police failing to make any visible progress in solving the case despite announcing a reward of Rs six lakh for information and constituting special investigating teams.
