Srinagar: Clashes erupted in Nowhatta area of downtown Srinagar post Friday congregational prayers between protestors and police.

Eyewitnesses told that a large number of people took to Nowhatta square after they offered prayers in Jamia masjid and were protesting against the civilian killing of a youth in south Kashmir yesterday.

Police fired tear-gas shells at the protestors to disperse them and chased them to different by lanes, an eyewitness said.

Mirwaiz Umar Farooq was put under house arrest soon after he offered prayers at the grand mosque.

Reports of stone-throwing also came from Batamaloo area of Srinagar where youth engaged police in main bazar Batamaloo after Friday prayers.
