Srinagar: Congregational Friday prayers are likely to be offered at Jamia Masjid in old Srinagar on Friday after prayers were disallowed at the historic mosque for 19 consecutive Fridays.

Eyewitnesses said that there were no restrictions in place in and around the Nowhatta square in downtown Srinagar and the main gates of the Jamia Masjid were open.

“God willing we will offer Jummah today. We will peacefully offer prayers and then will disperse peacefully,” a local said.

However, Mirwaiz Maulvi Umar Farooq is still placed under house arrest and is barred to offer prayer at the historic mosque, a close aide of Mirwaiz said.

Others reports suggested that the police in other parts of downtown didn’t allow people to reach to the Grand mosque.
