Days after a BJP leader and minister termed rise in Muslim population a threat to India’s “unity and integrity”, a senior Hindu seer Saturday said Hindus must bear at least four children till the Uniform Civil Code is implemented to check “demographic imbalance”.
Swami Govindadev Giriji Maharaj of Bharat Mata Mandirin Haridwar said the two-child policy should not be restricted to Hindus alone, noting that India had lost those territories wherever Hindu population reduced, resulting in demographic imbalance.
He was speaking to reporters on the second day of the three-day Dharma Sansad organised by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad, in the temple town of Udupi of coastal Karnataka. The mega religious event is being attended by over 2,000 Hindu seers, matt heads and VHP leaders from all over the country.
The Swami said the government was insisting on a maximum of two children, but till the time the Uniform Civil Code is implemented, Hindus should have at least four children. India lost many of its territories wherever Hindu population reduces, he said.
“We have seen that India lost those territories wherever Hindu population reduced, resulting in demographic imbalance. The two-child policy should not be restricted to Hindus alone.”
On cow-vigilantism, the seer said some criminals were settling personal scores under the guise of ‘Gau Rakshaks’.
“Gau Rakshaks are peace loving people. They havebeen defamed by some vested interests. Some criminals aresettling scores under the guise of Gau Rakshaks,” said GirijiMaharaj.
Terming “demographic change” a threat to India’s “unity and integrity”, BJP leader and minister Giriraj Singh had on November 17 said democracy is “safe” in the country as long as Hindus remain in the majority.
“…Democracy is safe in the country as long as majority (Hindu) population is there. The day the population of the majority community starts decreasing, the democracy, development and social harmony will be in danger,” he had said at the lecture on nationalism in Bhopal.
“Hindu population has dipped in 54 districts in states like Uttar Pradesh, Assam, West Bengal, Kerala, besides some other states. These districts are Muslim majority and this demographic change is a threat to the unity and integrity of the country,” the BJP leader said.
He said a family planning law for all faiths should be enacted. “…With all responsibility, I say that the social harmony has taken a beating and nationalism has declined (in areas) where the population of Hindus has declined,” he said.
