Srinagar: Heavy clashes between protesters and police were witnessed in Srinagar’s Soura area soon after the death of a Kangan youth today. Angry youth pelted stones at police and para-military forces which was retaliated by tear smoke shells by the police.

Gowhar Rather, 22, who, according to locals, was killed by government forces yesterday during clashes in Kangan, Ganderbal, succumbed today at SKIMS hospital.

The police, however, denied the claim that the youth was hit by a bullet in his head.

“On 02-04-2018, a group of miscreants had gathered in Kangan market to pelt stones and disturb law and order in the area. A police party reached the spot. On seeing, the miscreants started running during the course of which a boy Gowhar Ahmad Rather son Abdur Rahman Rather of Kangan fell down and injured his head on the edge of the drain,” a police spokesperson had said.

Protests erupted on Sunday in entire Kashmir Valley soon after the news of the killings of 13 militants and four civilians in three separate gunfights in south Kashmir’s Shopian and Anantnag districts spread in the region.
