Injured Shalimar youth succumbs; police denies involvement

Srinagar: A 16-year-old youth who according to his family members was injured and poisoned by police succumbed in Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical sciences (SKIMS), Soura today. The police, however, denied the allegation. The youth, a 10th class student, was identified as Kaiser Hameed Sofi of Shalimar, Srinagar.
“Kaiser was beaten-up by police last Thursday and was later poisoned by them. He had beating marks on his body with the result his kidney was badly damaged,” Muhammad Ayash Sofi, the youth’s maternal cousin, told Kashmir Narrator.
Sofi also said that the injured youth was on ventilator for the past week at SKIMS.
“He went missing on October 27. He later told his mother in the hospital that police tortured him and gave him poison before he was shifted to ICU,” Sofi said, adding that the youth will be laid to rest at martyrs’ graveyard, Eidgah.
A police official said that they have no records of such youth and they don’t take interest in such cases.
“It has become a routine that people blame police for everything. The youth has consumed poison for some reason and people blame police,” the official said.
Even though repeated attempts were made to contact SKIMS Medical Superintendent, he didn’t answer the phone calls.
