Jammu and Kashmir: Govt sacks doctor over Facebook post

Srinagar: The Jammu and Kashmir government has terminated the services of a Registrar of the Government Medical College (GMC) Jammu for an “anti-government” post on Facebook, an official order said.

“It was noticed that Dr Amit Kumar used his personal social media account (facebook) and commented with the intent of provoking readers,” read the order which was issued on 15 March.

Amit Kumar, Registrar in the Department of Anaesthesia, was sacked after he violated rules that prevent a government servant from using social media to write anti-government posts, the official order said. Kumar, who was selected in September last year, had been appointed for three years on contract to serve at the GMC Jammu.

Principal GMC Jammu, Dr Sunanda Raina confirmed the termination of the doctor to a local daily.

“We have initiated action as per the rules. The doctor has been asked to explain his position,” she said.

In December last year, the government introduced a controversial policy which inhibited government employees to air anti-government, anti-national sentiments on social media.

“Employees must not post, share or promote any status or post that may be contentious or has potential to create governance or law and order issues or are seen to propagate anything which is anti-social, anti-national or illegal,” read the order.
