Pulwama: A local militant, Rayees Ahmad Dar, was killed by the government forces on Saturday evening in, what police termed as, a brief encounter at Kakapora area of South Kashmir district Pulwama. According to locals, Dar, 32, had recently joined Lashkar-e-Toiba militant outfit, during the mass uprising after the killing of popular militant commander Burhan Wani in July.
Dar graduated from an engineering college some years ago and was presently teaching at a private institution in Baramullah district, locals said.
On Sunday morning, thousands of locals gathered in his village and offered funeral prayers over him, even thought police had sealed the whole area at different points and no one was allowed to come to attend the funeral, locals said.
Later on, after offering the funeral prayers, youth marched towards the main road and engaged police and CRPF in fierce stone-pelting. The government forces, however, resorted to massive tear-gas shelling to thwart the protests from spreading to other parts of the district.
