The house of a PDP leader, who was gunned down by militants in Shopian district last night, was set on fire by a mob Tuesday, police said.
Mohammed Ramzan Sheikh, a former sarpanch, was killed by militants last night at his house located at Humhuna , a police official said.
Sheikh’s family members had a scuffle with the assailants in which one of the militants, identified as Showkat Ahmed was also killed, the official said.
As the mourners were gathering at the residence of Sheikh, a mob attacked the house, police said.
Immediately, police swung into action and rescued the family members which included Sheikh’s mother, Rafiqa, wife Nusrat Begum, brother Farooq Ahmed Sheikh, his two sons and two daughters.
Director General of Police S P Vaid tweeted, “A mob on the instigation of terrorists attacked the house of ex sarpanch who was martyred last night. Police and security forces have rushed to the spot.”
“Strong action under law is being taken against the perpetrators,” he said.
Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti and opposition National Conference leader Omar Abdullah condemned the “dastardly act.”
