Opposed by IB and Army, Ramazan ceasefire had Rajnath, Madhav and Doval’s backing: Report
After the Jammu and Kashmir’s BJP unit opposed the idea of announcing a unilateral ceasefire during the month of Ramazan, a Quint report said that Home Minister Rajnath Singh, party’s Kashmir minder Ram Madhav and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval favoured it while the Intelligence Bureau and the Indian Army bitterly opposed the move.
“Even though the decision was bitterly opposed by both the Intelligence Bureau and the Indian Army, highly-placed government sources said, it won the support not just of the Home Minister and party tactician Ram Madhav, but also National Security Advisor Ajit Doval,” the report said.
The report opined that the Indian government should eschew from such gestures, and “incrementally address problems – by improving policing of mass protests with non-lethal weapons, increasing prosecutions of rioters, and enhancing training to improve precision counter-insurgency operations”. The government of India announced a unilateral ceasefire on Wednesday “to help the peace loving Muslims observe Ramzan in a peaceful environment.”
