A shutdown is being observed across Kashmir on the fifth anniversary of the hanging of Afzal Guru even as authorities imposed restrictions in parts of Srinagar city to prevent protests.
The Joint Resistance Leadership comprising Syed Ali Geelani, Mirwaiz Umar Farooq and Yasin Malik had called for a shutdown to mark Guru’ s hanging in Delhi’s Tihar Jail and to reiterate the demand for the return of his mortal remains to the family.
Afzal was hanged on February 9, 2013 after the Supreme Court upheld his death sentence in the 2001 Parliament attack case. He was buried inside the jail premises. (Pictures by Zargar Zahoor)
