Police demand son as ‘ransom’ for father’s release; detain 3 teenagers in Budgam

Srinagar: Police detained the father of a youth instead of him in central Kashmir’s Budgam district along with three teenage boys in separate night raids and demanded the whereabouts of his son as a condition for his release, a local news agency reported today.

“Police arrested Mushtaq Ahmad Magray, father of a local youth Muntazir of Magraypora Manchowa, who was the target. However, some protesters blocked Alamdar Srinagar Chareer-i-Shareef road near Railway Bridge Baghe-Mehtab in protest against these arrests. The traffic halted for some time but later resumed peacefully,” the report said.

The three detained teenagers were identified as Adnan Farooq (17) son of Farooq Ahmad Wani, a 12th class student, Ashraf Ahmad (18) of Ramban, a 12th class Student of SP higher secondary and Suhail Ahmad (13), a resident of Kupwara of 8th class student of prime public school Baghat. Wani and Suhail are putting up in Bag-e-Mehtab on rent.

Regarding the arrest of the father instead of his son, an officer said that he will look into it, the report added.

Earlier, police also arrested another youth known by his nickname Maya who is a resident of Manochow along with another youth two days ago in separate raids, the report said.

The police officer said that the youth were identified through video shot of the stone pelting incident in the area recently.
