Srinagar: Clashes erupted between protestors and police forces in downtown Srinagar post-Friday prayers, with police resorting to heavy tear gas shelling.
The clashes erupted outside Mirwaiz Manzil in downtown Srinagar after Mirwaiz Umar Farooq, who offered prayers at Jamia masjid after five months, addressed a gathering there.
People were shouting azadi slogans and were protesting against more than 90 civilian killings that took place after top Hizb commander Burhan Wani was killed by the government forces on 8 July.
“Soon after Friday prayers, Mirwaiz sahib took out a peaceful procession and marched towards Rajouri Kadal. Women, children, youth were part of the peaceful procession. However, police directly aimed at the protestors and dispersed them,” a local who was part of the procession told Narrator.
Reports of stone-pelting between protestors and police also came from Batamaloo area of Srinagar.
