Television host and actor Hamza Ali Abbasi was trolled on Twitter after he praised Jamaat-ud- Dawa chief Hafiz Saeed as a “righteous man” and “mentor to Kashmiris.”
“US/India say he is a terrorist; I know Hafiz Saeed as a righteous man,” the renowned actor and show presenter said before adding, “Huge respect for Milli Muslim League for getting 4k+ votes.”
While many were astonished at the number of votes bagged by Hafiz Saeed-led Milli Muslim League (MML) in the NA-120 polls, Abbasi stirred a fresh storm by praising Saeed in his tweets.
The NA-120 seat, which fell vacant after Nawaz Sharif was disqualified by Pakistan’s top court following a landmark judgment in the Panama Papers case, was won by Sharif’s wife Kulsoom Nawaz.
Abbasi justified his support for the Jamaat-ud- Dawa (JuD) chief, saying, “Hafiz Saeed has done great work against Takfeer & Sectarianism, social work for non Muslims of Pakistan & is a mentor to Kashmiris.”
Abbasi then appeared to clarify Saeed’s stance on his behalf, on Kashmir too. “Hafiz Saeed doesn’t hate India or Indians. He only hates & speaks against Indian Govt’s atrocities in Indian Occupied Kashmir.”
Hafiz Saeed, who is currently under house arrest in Lahore under the provisions of Pakistan’s Anti-Terrorism Act, is accused by the United States and India of masterminding the 2008 attacks on the Indian financial capital Mumbai that killed 166 people. He has repeatedly denied the charges.
