SC sends Calcutta HC justice to jail for six months, orders immediate arrest

Srinagar: The Supreme Court found Calcutta high court’s Justice CS Karnan guilty of contempt on Tuesday and sent him to jail for six months, a media report said on Tuesday.

Karnan, 59, is the first sitting HC judge to be convicted of contempt and sent to prison. A seven-judge bench led by Chief Justice of India JS Khehar passed the order, the report added.

Karnan, a Dalit, has accused Khehar and seven other SC judges of discrimination and corruption, the report said.

On Monday, Karnan passed an order sending the CJI and six other judges to five years in jail under the SC/ST Act, the report said.
