Shopian teenager laid to rest

Srinagar: A teenager from Shopian’s Turkewangam village, who was killed Wednesday by government forces during a gunfight with militants, was laid to rest Thursday in his native village. 

The slain teenager was identified as 14-year-old Umar Kumar. Thousands attended his funeral prayers, reports said.

The government forces had to call off the anti-militancy operation Thursday morning after militants managed to escape from the area.

At least five militants were believed to be trapped in the area. Hizbul Mujahideen commander Zeenat-ul-Islam was among the trapped militants, reports said.

The residential house of the HM commander’s relatives was damaged during the gunfight in the village.

Reports said that one Army personnel was also injured after a bullet hit him and is currently recuperating at an army hospital here.
