Russia’s Defence Ministry said on Sunday that one of its top generals has been killed in an attack by Islamic State in Syria.
The ministry said Lieutenant-General Valeryi Asapov died at a command station manned by Syrian troops in the war-torn city of Deir al-Zor.
“As a result of a sudden mortar shelling by IS militants, Lieutenant-General Valery Asapov was fatally wounded by an exploding shell,” the Ministry said.
Asapov is the highest-ranking Russian military officer to be killed in Syria.
Asapov was a commander of the 5th Army in Russia’s Eastern Military District, what RT described as one of Russia’s four strategic commands, based in Ussuriysk, near Vladivostok.
According to Russian media, at the beginning of the month, two Russian “contract soldiers” were killed by ISIS in Deir al-Zor.
In recognition of his services, Asapov will be presented with a posthumous state decoration.
