Srinagar: The Srinagar Municipal Corporation (SMC) has been talking about and selling the idea of a “Smart City” to the residents of the city for some time now. Kashmir Narrator photojournalist Muhammad Aamir spotted something on Srinagar-Jammu Highway in the posh area of Hyderpora which could well serve as a reality check, both for the corporation as well as the residents of the city.
Garbage containers dot Hyderpora of Srinagar. SMC vehicles bring garbage from different parts of Srinagar and dump it in these containers.
Not only garbage, discarded household and industrial items litter the highway and roads of Srinagar.
The entire locality stinks during summers and endangers the health of the residents.
The garbage overflows on to the ground many times when the containers swell with more and more garbage.
The containers also add to the traffic mess on the highway.
Despite financial assistance from an institution like the Asian Development Bank, the performance of the SMC leaves much to be desired.
Dogs add to the problem by spreading the garbage inside the containers on to the roads.
