Civilian killed, another critically injured in south Kashmir

Srinagar: A civilian was killed and another critically injured in Hassanpora village of Arwani in Bijbehara area of south Kashmir’s Anantnag district on Thursday, where an encounter between forces and militants was underway.

Eyewitnesses said that youth tried to engage forces to help militants escape from the area.

“Forces fired upon civilians with the result two civilians were hit with bullets among which one died while another was critically injured,” a local said.

Police, however, said that the youth was hit by a stray bullet.

The deceased was  identified as Arif Ahmad Shah, a resident of Nyaina Sangam.

The critically injured civilian was identified as Bilal Ahmad of Hasanpora village who was shifted to Sheri-Kashmir Institute of Medical Sciences, Srinagar for treatment.

Over 30 people were injured in the clashes.
