Srinagar: Former chief minister Omar Abdullah Thursday jeered at Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti after Union Minister Jitendra Singh hinted that Asifa Banu’s rape and murder case will be handed over to Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI).
“The case is being handled by the J&K police. If @MehboobaMufti agrees to hand the case over to the CBI it will be another installment in the price she’s paying to remain CM,” Omar tweeted.
The case is presently handled by Crime Branch of Jammu and Kashmir Police.
Earlier, Jitednra Singh said that there is no problem to hand over the case to CBI if people don’t have faith in police.
“If people feel that they don’t have faith in the police or crime branch investigation and the case needs to be handed over to the CBI, I don’t think there is any problem,” Singh said.
Asifa Banu, an eight-year-old tribal girl of Katua, was raped and killed and her body was found from a forest area in Rasana village of Kathua district on 17 January.
“The girl was raped and murdered to create fear among the members of the Gujjar community so that they would leave the area,” an official told a local daily.
“The CB, which took over investigation from the police, had earlier this month arrested SPO Deepak Khajuria for his direct involvement in the crime. Deepak was also part of the police team that had ‘searched’ for Asifa after she was abducted on January 10. He has reportedly told the investigators that the motive behind the crime was to instill fear among Bakerwal community,” Greater Kashmir reported on 17 February.
Pertinently, the BJP has demanded an “exemplary punishment” for the special police officer arrested on charges of rape and murder of Asifa Banu. The party also distanced itself from the protest staged by Hindu Ekta Manch, headed by Vijay Sharma, to seek release of the accused.
