Police ‘abuses women’ in nocturnal raid in Parimpora, village elders detained

Srinagar: Police ransacked houses and “abused women” in Parimpora in a nocturnal raid during the intervening night of 12 and 13 November, locals told Kashmir Narrator over phone. The police party led by Dy SP Furqan Qadri raided the Souzeth locality of Parimpora in Srinagar at 1am to “detain local youth”, said locals, a charge dismissed by the police.

“Police asked women, who were in their night dresses, to come out of houses. The whole village was asleep. They came with hammers, smashed window panes of our homes and vehicles. It was all panic,” a local who identified himself as Khizr Muhammad told Narrator.

Muhammad added that his brother, Habibullah Bhat, who is the village head, was detained by the police in the same raid along with other four elders of the locality.

“Earlier it was mujahideen who used to harass us for supporting the PDP and now it is the police who beat us up for supporting stone-pelters. We don’t support anyone; neither PDP nor stone-pelting. Frustration has overwhelmed us. It is a tragedy that we receive such treatment from Mehbooba ji’s party whom we supported earlier. I sometimes think of picking up the gun to end this pain,” Muhammad added.

Locals also said that LED TVs, washing machines, computers were destroyed in the police raid.

Police, however, denied that any nocturnal raid was conducted in the locality.

“It is a false charge. We didn’t conduct any raid in the entire area,” Dy SP Qadri said.
