Students clash with police in Pulwama

Srinagar: School and college students clashed with police in Pulwama town on Monday after the government forces resorted to tear gas shelling to thwart a protest march. The students were protesting outside a police station, demanding the release of their classmates who were arrested by the police last week, reports said.

The clashes triggered a shutdown in the area. Till last reports came, the clashes were going on in the area.

Of late, student clashes have put the Jammu and Kashmir government in a bind. The government has ordered the closure of some colleges and schools in Srinagar to avert student protests.

The trouble erupted on April 15 when police and paramilitary forces tried to enter Pulwama Degree College. The move met with stiff resistance from students, which resulted in clashes between government forces and students.

More than 50 college students, which included a number of girls also, were injured in the ensuing clashes.
